A floor/shoe rail molding is the lower-most portion of the balustrade of a staircase that receives the vertical balusters or spindles. They are mounted to a floor or secured into a wall and or newel post. They generally have a specific size dado milled into the top of the pattern to receive the identical size balusters or spindles. Minor thin fillers get installed into the spaces between the balusters underneath the hand railing and the top of the floor railing.
