This 54.5 Degree Back Bevel Moulding Cutter is designed to mill a fifty-four and one half degree chamfer on the backside of a piece of crown, cove, or bed moulding. These cutters create only half of the determining factor of the final height and projection of these types of mouldings when installed. The other half of the equation is generally a degree that combined equals ninety, or slightly more depending on the specified tolerances of the manufacturer. On this specific bevel cutter, the maximum depth of cut is 1.053", the maximum height of cut is set at .751".
Every sprung moulding we design has height dimensions near the edge of the degree bevel, that number must be smaller than the height number, in this case .751" for this knife to be able to cut the entire back cut while milling, if not please select a different sized chamfer. We layout all our crown mouldings with forty-five-degree bevels and under milled on the right vertical moulder spindle, and all forty-five degree and higher bevels milled on the left vertical spindle. Our custom design feature will save thousands of dollars in manufacturing cost over the years.
Please read our commentary about Axial Constant Position for Crown Moulding Bevels, this article will help you dial this profile in axially on the first try when milling this detail on an industrial moulder, provided the machine is axially calibrated.
