Tongue & Groove 1/2"

This 1/2" tongue & groove flooring comprises a 3/16" wide by 11/64" tall tongue and groove. When two pieces of milled lumber join, they create a simple butt joint on the face side. There is a hidden nail groove for securing the wood and a 3/64" wide gap on the bottom side to ensure a tight fit of the merged boards on the face. There is a .005" void built into the joint area for expansion and contraction of the wood during seasonal changes in relative humidity. The pattern measures .500" in thickness, and the width is determined before milling. The suggested rough wood rip size using four-quarter lumber is 1/4" larger in width than the sought-after milled dimension.

There are two sets of profile templates for this detail, one for machining face up and the other for milling face down. The face-down set allows a resawn face to be machined without damaging the wood from aggressive feed rollers on the machinery. This set fills a 60mm cutterhead; it has both the tongue and groove in the knife design, allowing the cutterheads to be swapped from right to left without sharpening the blades, doubling the production from a single sharpening.
